Headline will explore the perils of investigative journalism
A new eight-part investigative thriller is set to explore the high-stakes world of financial corruption and media censorship in Bangladesh. Directed by Saleh Sobhan Auneem, the upcoming hoichoi original series, Headline, scheduled for global release on 25 June, follows the dangerous intersection of crime reporting and political influence.
The narrative centres on Samiul, an ambitious young reporter who believes he has uncovered the biggest story of his career after exposing a massive money-laundering syndicate. The breakthrough quickly turns into a nightmare when his front-page report vanishes overnight, revealing the immense corporate and institutional pressures operating behind the scenes. Following the suppression of the story, Samiul's veteran investigative partner, Zahir Ahmed, is forced into hiding as corrupt Detective Branch (DB) officers hunt him down.
The series marks a significant return for prominent actor Ziaul Faruq Apurba, who steps into the role of the seasoned journalist, Zahir, after a two-year hiatus from over-the-top (OTT) platforms. Speaking about his character's internal conflicts, Apurba noted the complexity of the role. "Jahir's character has a fantastic arc," he said. "He is seen in different shades at various stages of the story. Sometimes he is very emotional, and at other times, he is forced to make tough decisions while facing the harsh realities of life." Apurba added that the contemporary relevance of the script was a deciding factor for his return: "The pacing of the plot, the mystery, and the contemporary context are so strong."
Co-star Yash Rohan, who portrays the young journalist Samiul, described the role as a definitive moment in his career, stating that he "gave his heart and soul to the character" to ensure an authentic portrayal of a reporter under immense duress. The ensemble cast also features Afsana Ara Bindu, marking her debut in a web series after a three-year break, alongside Sarika Subrin, Shamol Mawla, and Farhana Hamid.
Rather than focusing solely on the mechanics of a criminal investigation, Headline aims to delve into the psychological toll inflicted on media professionals and their families when challenging powerful syndicates. The series presents a stark look at the vulnerabilities of modern journalism, where exposing the truth frequently carries a devastating personal cost.
