Coke Studio Bangla’s Megh draws mixed reactions
Coke Studio Bangla's latest track, 'Megh', has certainly made a splash, though perhaps not entirely in the way its creators expected. Released as a monsoon tribute for Season 4, the song instantly became a hot topic across social media, drawing a very mixed bag of reactions from listeners.
At the centre of the online chatter is an experimental decision to incorporate Rabindranath Tagore's beloved poem, 'Sonar Tori', as a fast-paced rap section. While the musical platform is widely celebrated for its bold fusions, this particular blend caught many off guard. The highly unconventional take on a literary classic did not sit easily with a large section of the audience, quickly sparking a wave of memes and critical discussions online.
However, the reception was not entirely negative. Despite the debate over the musical arrangement, the vocal performances managed to shine through the noise and win over the critics. Listeners were quick to praise Masha Islam for her powerful and refreshing entry. Similarly, the masterful classical delivery by vocalist Mohammed Shoeb earned widespread appreciation, anchoring the track with his depth and skill.
Produced by Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, 'Megh' is deeply rooted in the monsoon Raag 'Mian Ki Malhar'. The project aimed to capture the spirit of Ashar by bridging classical Bengali traditions with modern spoken-word influences. Featuring Mousumi Dutta alongside Masha and Shoeb, the track layers traditional vocal techniques with contemporary beats.
While the bold reinterpretation of Tagore's poetry might have divided the internet, 'Megh' has undoubtedly succeeded in getting everyone talking about the evolving landscape of local fusion music.
