Anne Hathaway’s pop persona cracks in Mother Mary
A24 has unveiled the first trailer for 'Mother Mary', a surreal psychological drama from David Lowery that blends pop stardom with gothic melodrama.
Led by Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, the film follows a fractured reunion between a global pop icon and the friend she left behind. Set for a limited release on 17 April, before expanding nationwide on 24 April, the film carries an R rating for violence and language.
Hathaway plays Mother Mary, a larger-than-life performer grappling with identity and the crushing weight of fame. When she reconnects with her former costume designer Sam, portrayed by Coel, their shared history resurfaces in a hallucinatory night of confrontation and creativity. The story unfolds as both an emotional reckoning and an artistic collaboration, anchored in themes of regret, forgiveness, and reinvention.
The film's sonic landscape is just as ambitious, featuring original music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs. With its dreamlike visuals and exploration of creative connection, Mother Mary positions itself as a bold meditation on how art can transform pain into something transcendent.
