Ali wins at SXSW London
The acclaimed Bangladeshi short film Ali, directed by Adnan Al Rajeev, has secured the coveted Short Film Prize at South by Southwest (SXSW) London.
The UK edition of the world-renowned festival celebrates groundbreaking talent across film, music, and technology. This latest accolade marks another triumph for the Bangladesh-Philippines co-production, which has built an extraordinary presence on the global festival circuit.
Ali initially made cinematic history at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Bangladeshi short film to enter the Official Short Film Competition, where it received a Special Mention from the jury. Since then, the production has collected numerous honours, including awards and special mentions at major festivals in Spain, Germany, Canada, and Ukraine.
The short film follows a talented teenage boy residing in a conservative coastal town where women are prohibited from singing. Possessing an exceptional voice, the protagonist secretly enters a singing contest, initiating a powerful exploration of identity, self-expression, and defiance against rigid societal constraints.
With its victory in London, Ali reinforces its status as a landmark achievement for Bangladeshi cinema, captivating international audiences and critics alike.
