9 countries stop supporting Myanmar on Rohingya issue

During a regular session of the United Nations' General Assembly on Thursday, nine African and Asian countries voted for a proposal brought against Myanmar for its treatment against Rohingya and the country's minor communities.
The countries are Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambik, Tanzania, Palau, and Solomon islands, reports Prothom Alo.
The proposal has received 130 votes in its favour, while 9 went against it.
Nations who opposed the proposal include Myanmar, China, Russia, Belarush, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
25 countries, including India and three other South Asian nations, viz., Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan, abstained from voting. Japan remained neutral on the issue.
The European Union (EU) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) brought forward the proposal to the UN third committee in November last year.
The proposal focuses on the interim order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), probe order by the International Criminal Court (ICC), the barring of Rohingyas and other minor communities from Myanmar's national elections, and several other cases.
The proposal covers other suggestions, including a call to give Rohingyas citizenship, create a conducive environment for their repatriation, and other remedial steps that Myanmar has been asked to take.
