6 cows killed in Cumilla cold storage collapse

Six cows were killed as an old cold storage suddenly collapsed in Burichang upazila of Cumilla on Tuesday.

According to the locals, Mokam Cold Storage Ltd was located in a 50-year-old five-storey building at Kabila Bazar of Mokam Union of the upazila.

However, the owner of the building Golam Sarwar said, "The building is eight years old. I don't know why it collapsed."

Although no humans were hurt in the incident, it killed six cows from the next door cattle farm.

It is also estimated that about 70,000 tonnes of potatoes stored in the cold storage has been damaged.

Ali Azam, senior station officer of Cumilla Fire Service, said, "Five fire service units from Cumilla Sadar and Chandina worked on the site. There is a cattle farm next to the cold storage. We moved the farm's cows to safety."

Cumilla Fire Service Deputy Director Sharful Hasan Bhuiyan said, "The farm had 72 cows. We were able to rescue 66 cows alive. The remaining six cows died."
