Buet tapes out open-source 32-bit RISC-V processor 'Pragati v1'
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has completed the tape-out of Pragati v1, a fully open-source 32-bit RISC-V processor.
The development represents a step towards strengthening Bangladesh's capacity in domestic semiconductor chip design and building a national semiconductor ecosystem.
A souvenir of the fabricated chip was presented to Buet Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury to mark the achievement.
Project Supervisor Professor ABM Harun-ur Rashid, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Professor Mominuzzaman, Neural Semiconductor Limited Chief Executive Officer Md Shakhawat Hossain, iTest Inc Director Syed Munir and iTest Bangladesh Engineering Lead Md Mashur Shalehin attended the event alongside members of the research and development team.
Led by Professor ABM Harun-ur Rashid, the project was carried out by undergraduate students Khalid Hossain and Sheikh Tariful Islam with technical support from Neural Semiconductor Limited.
Pragati v1 was designed as a system-on-chip for smart household appliances, including air conditioners and smart refrigerators, as well as internet of things applications.
Built on the open-standard RISC-V instruction set architecture, the processor was developed entirely using open-source electronic design automation tools and the IHP SG13G2 130-nanometre open-source process design kit.
The chip was fabricated free of charge by IHP – Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics in Germany under its open-source fabrication programme. It has since arrived at Buet.
