Akij Agro partners Chinese company for fisheries project in Kishoreganj
Akij Agro & Livestock Ltd and Anhui New Ready Co., Ltd. have launched a modern fisheries project in Kishoreganj to promote safe, sustainable, and technology-driven fish farming in Bangladesh.
The joint venture project was inaugurated on 16 May 2026 by Monowara Begum, wife of the late Sheikh Akij Uddin, founder of Akij Group, along with Sheikh Shamim Uddin and members of his family.
Bao Haixin, Director of Anhui New Ready Co., Ltd., attended the agreement signing ceremony on behalf of the Chinese technical partner.
Speaking at the event, Monowara Begum said many popular and indigenous fish species in Bangladesh were gradually disappearing, while pollution was affecting the nutritional value of fish.
"Our country's many popular and delicious indigenous fish species are gradually disappearing over time. At the same time, pollution is causing fish to lose their nutritional value. It is essential that we preserve these native fish in a healthy and safe manner for future generations, and the time to act is now," she said.
"I pray to Almighty Allah for the success of this project, and I hope that, Insha'Allah, this initiative will contribute not only to fish production and preservation, but also to employment generation and the improvement of living standards in this region," she added.
Sheikh Shamim Uddin, Chairman of Akij Ventures, said the joint venture between Akij Agro & Livestock Ltd and Anhui New Ready Co. Ltd was a milestone for Bangladesh's fisheries industry.
"Insha'Allah, this project will not only help meet domestic demand for indigenous fish, but also expand the presence of Bangladeshi fish in international markets, create new demand and strengthen the national economy," he said.
He said fish is an essential part of the daily diet of people in Bangladesh and one of the country's most important sources of nutrition.
"Therefore, it is essential that the fish we consume be safe. With safe food as our guiding principle, we are working tirelessly to ensure this commitment is fulfilled," he added.
Syed Zahurul Alam, Md Maruf Ahmed, and other senior officials were also present at the event.
The joint venture is expected to contribute to the development of Bangladesh's fisheries sector by introducing modern technology and international expertise to ensure safe, sustainable and efficient fish farming practices.
