3 held for Uber driver murder in Uttara
The arrestees have confessed to the crime in primary interrogations.
Detectives have arrested three people for their alleged involvement in the recent murder of a driver of Uber, a ride-sharing service provider, at the city’s Uttara.
The body of 42-year-old Md Arman was found inside a car in Uttara in the early hours of June 13.
Sijan, Sharif and Sajib were picked up on Saturday night, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The Detective Branch of police also recovered two switchgear knives from their possession, he added.
The arrestees have confessed to the crime in primary interrogations, said Abdul Baten, additional commissioner (detectives) of the DMP.
“They are professional carjackers,” he said.
According to the officer, Sijan had a buyer who wanted to pay Tk8 lakh for a Toyota Allion car.
Sijan with his two associates had planned to snatch a car of that model and decided to search it out from the Uber app, he added.
The prime suspect kept searching for an Uber ride to a pre-planned destination and after four unsuccessful attempts, he got a ride by an Allion, Baten further said.
The trio got in the car and when they reached their destination – a dark and silent place at Uttara – Sharif cut the driver’s throat from behind.
Arman lost his control and the car crashed. He died of bleeding after a while but the carjackers failed to make away with the vehicle due to unavoidable circumstances.
Law enforcers are now working to unearth the motive of the person who wanted to buy the car from Sijan, said the police.
