Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Malaysia's deputy prime minister, is designated to become the country's first woman prime minister, after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned on Monday, because of an alleged failed coup to form a backdoor government with opposition parties, reports the Malay Mail.

A source close to Anwar Ibrahim, President of People's Justice Party and Mahathir's promised successor, said Wan Azizah was "the interim prime minister".

Anwar Ibrahim is also the husband of Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah.

However, Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin, the Malaysian King, had appointed Mahathir as interim premier until a head of government is chosen, after accepting his resignation, according to a report by The Straits Times.
