Arvind Kejriwal: The man who is set to defeat Modi's BJP in Delhi

Arvind Kejriwal has done a lot for Indian politics and ushered in a trend where politics is now being seen as a career by young professionals. 

Engineers, bankers, chartered accountants – people who never looked at Indian politics see this mechanical engineer from IIT Kharagpur without a dynastic surname make a space for himself and realise: It is possible after all.

At the very beginning, while rising through an anti-corruption movement, Kejriwal joined various activists including Anna Hazare and Kiran Bedi in 2011 to form the India Against Corruption (IAC) group.

Later Kejriwal announced the formation of a political party on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2012. He formally launched the party next month on November 26, the day when the Constitution of India was adopted in 1949.

The party was named Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – the common man's party.

First victory: December, 2013
On December 4, 2013, the party contested elections for the first time for the Delhi legislative assembly. Arvind Kejriwal defeated Sheila Dikshit who had been the chief minister of Delhi for three successive terms.

But Kejriwal relinquished power on February 14 next year after ruling the New Delhi constituency only for 49 days. The then Indian President Pranab Mukherjee imposed president's rule in Delhi after his resignation. 

2014 General Elections
After the resignation, Kejriwal announced he would not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. But AAP members persuaded him to change his mind, leading him to contest against BJP prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, from Varanasi. 

However, he lost in the polls by around 4 lakh votes. 

2015 Delhi Assembly Elections and his historic win
The Election Commission of India dissolved the Delhi Legislative Assembly after nine months of governor's rule. 

On January 12, the commission announced the polls for the 70-member Delhi Assembly to be held on February 7.

Kejriwal led AAP and started making a strategy for the elections. A list of 62 candidates was released initially for the elections. Later, eight other names were added to the list.

The AAP secured an absolute majority in the assembly, winning 67 of the 70 seats. The BJP secured three seats while the Indian National Congress got nothing. 

In the election, Kejriwal beat Nupur Sharma of BJP by around 31,583 votes. On February 14, 2015, he took oath as Delhi's chief minister for a second time at Ramlila Maidan. Since then his party passed the Jan Lokpal Bill, though with some changes.

Delhi Assembly Elections 2020
Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is going to retain power in Delhi for the third consecutive term, according to the Times Now-IPSOS exit poll.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP is set to face a defeat in the New Delhi Assembly election, the exit poll predicted on Saturday.

The AAP is expected to win 44 seats in the assembly, and BJP is predicted to win 26 seats.
