Legendary actor Humayun Faridi’s 69th birth anniversary today

Actor Humayun Faridi was born on 29 May, 1952. From theatre to commercial Bangla films, the gem of an actor made his mark in every medium of acting in Bangladesh.

The late Ekushey Padak and Bangladesh National Film Award-winning actor Humayun Faridi would have turned 69 this year. 

Born in Narinda of Old Dhaka in 1952, the veteran actor started his acting career as a Jatra artiste at an early age and became deeply involved in theatre while studying at Jahangirnagar University.

Humayun Faridi later joined Dhaka Theatre and became an integral part of popular productions such as Shakuntala, Kittankhola, Keramat Mangal and others.

Faridi's brilliance in Bangla movies is wonderfully projected through his versatile choices in characters, a number of which were antagonistic roles. But even in a villainous role, he stole the spotlight. His portrayal of "Kan kata Ramjan" has become a phenomenon is the TV history of our country. 

However, his role of Mr Hawladar, a sexist and abusive manager in the cult classic film "Palabi Kothay", is also one of his finest works. In the age of #MeToo movement, the film looks more relevant and it was certainly ahead of its time.

Faridi's notable works also include Sangshaptak, Nil Nakshar Sandhane, Durbin Diye Dekhun, Bhanganer Shabda Shuni, Bakulpur Koto Dur, Ekti Lal Shari and others.

Faridi was equally adept at recitation. He had been reciting since his campus days at Jahangirnagar University.  His recitation clips of the poems "Nobin Kishor" or "Jodi Nirbashon Dao" are widely watched on social media.

Faridi's first mainstream film was "Santrash" which was released in 1990. Through his path-breaking style and innovative dialogue throws, he was able to win the hearts of audiences in popular films namely Hulia, Dahan, Joyjatra, Shyamal Chhaya Bachelor and others.

The versatile actor acted in 56 films and received the National Film Award for his acting in "Matritwa" in 2004.

Humayun Faridi breathed his last on 13 February, 2012 at his Dhanmondi residence at the age of 60 after suffering from chronic lung disease. The legendary actor was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2018.
