The commerce ministry has dissolved the committee of Bangladesh Film Producers Distributors Association over the complaint of actor Zayed Khan against the committee.

Zayed, general secretary of Bangladesh Film Artists Association, alleged that the members of the committee were elected through a rigged election.

He told The Business Standard, "I informed the commerce ministry about the irregularities in the committee through filing a complaint with the ministry. The committee has been dissolved as the allegations were proven true in an investigation. Besides, this committee had cancelled my membership. Now the ministry has kept it through issuing a notice. I am always with the truth. Now new election will be held and new committee will be formed. I hope the association will be operated nicely."

Khandaker Nurul Haque, deputy secretary to the commerce ministry, has been appointed as the administrator of the association after dissolving the committee.

It is mentioned in the notice issued by the ministry that a fresh election will be held within 120 days.

Though the producers' association had a plan to make an appeal to the ministry against the decision of dissolving the committee, it has backtracked now. The members of the association are now interested in the new election.

Bangladesh Film Producers Distributors Association is registered with the commerce ministry and it is a member Of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. There are 140 members in the association.

The last election of the Film Producers Distributors Association was held in July of 2019.

Khorshed Alam Khosru was elected president while Shamsul Alam became the general secretary of the association.

The committee was supposed to lead the association till 2021.

Shamsul Alam said, "We had a short tenure. Though we had a plan to make an appeal to the ministry after dissolving the committee, we have not taken any decision as yet. We are now waiting for the schedule of the new election."

Around a month ago, Misha Shawdagor, president of the Film Artists Association, and Zayed's conflicts with the Film Producers Distributors Association became severe. The leaders of the producers' association announced the actors unwanted and declared that they would not take them in any new film.

Several film artists held a human chain in front of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC), demanding resignation of Zayed from his position in Bangladesh Film Artists Association. A total of 18 associations related to the film industry expressed their solidarity with the protesting artists. But instead of resigning, Zayed lodged the complaint with the ministry.
