The Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days; and also afterward; when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown-Genesis 6:4.

Nephilim were giants, according to the holy books, they even ruled certain parts of this planet.

The Giant's Causeway is in a place called Antrim in the high hills of Northern Ireland by the Atlantic Ocean.

Some 50-60 million years ago, due to some ancient volcanic activity, molten basalt consolidated and formed these columns.

We all know that giants live only in fairytales, but looking at the gigantic 40,000 interlocked columns, one cannot help but wonder whether giants actually existed.

Each of the columns weigh a few tons and it is a thing of wonder how they stood so erect to look like a pathway actually built for giants.

According to Irish mythology, there was a giant called Finn McCool who got himself into a spot of trouble with another Scottish giant called Benandonner who wanted to capture Finn's island.

Enraged at Benandonner's attempt, Finn McCool started to hurl boulders into the sea off the Antrim coastline.

Later he turned the rocks into a bridge or – a Giant's Causeway – all the way to the Scottish Island.  

As a child, I had learned about this fable but when I saw the causeway, I was overwhelmed by its colossal beauty.

When we arrived in Belfast, it was early morning. We took the direct public bus from the city to reach the causeway.

On our way, we witnessed the picturesque Irish coast with blue ocean and emerald green hills.

The Giant's Causeway is a UNESCO world heritage site and entry is free of cost.

The column tops have small pools of water resulting from oceanic splashes that are easily spotted. The pools have small aquatic plants, barnacles and even small fish!

But there, in that alien landscape, the lifeless stones are much more attractive than live animals
