Dalgona coffee: What is so special about it?
The drink is also being called ‘quarantine coffee’
Since every nation began its quarantine protocol for the pandemic, we could no longer physically interact with our dear ones. However, to increase communication and to keep each other engaged in fun activities, people are throwing challenges at each other on social media platforms and creating new trends.
One such trend that has taken the internet by storm is making the "Dalgona coffee". The viral food trend is meant to be undertaken at home and its pictures shared on social media.
The drink is also being called 'quarantine coffee'. The taste of the four-ingredient, two-toned coffee has made it a favourite among those who miss their usual store bought cuppa. Since going to cafés are no longer possible, many have resorted to making Dalgona coffee and enjoying it at home.
Dalgona coffee is not a new drink actually; whipped coffee such as this one is available in Pakistan, India, and Macau. Some also say that this coffee is based on a beverage named "Phenti Hui Coffee" or beaten coffee.
Dalgona coffee received a lot of attention when it appeared on a Korean TV show called "Pyunstorang" in January 2020. In one of its episode, an actor Jung II-woo showed how to make it. There he mentioned that he had visited a restaurant in Macau where a type of coffee was served which reminded him of South Korean Dalgona cookies. Thus he named this coffee after that particular honeycomb toffee – Dalgona.
Social media users from all over the world are taking the dalgona challenge and creating their versions of the drink.
How to make Dalgona Coffee?
To make this super easy drink, one just needs four ingredients and a little bit of arm strength:
- 2 tbsp instant coffee
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp hot water
- ½ cup hot or cold milk
Take a small bowl and mix all the ingredients together, except the milk. Now, whip the mixture with an electric beater (or a hand mixer) until it turns thick and foamy. After getting your desirable texture, pour some hot or cold milk into a glass. Then top it off with the whipped coffee mixture. And voila! Your quarantine coffee is ready.
