‘Recognise 8 January as National Farmers’ Day’

With a slogan "Jara Jogay Khudhar Onno, Amra Achi Tader Jonno [We Are Here For Those Who Feed Us]," Probin Krishak Kallyan Foundation (PKKF) – a pro-agriculture organisation – has demanded that 8 January be recognised as National Farmers' Day.
The leaders of the organisation organised a human chain in front of the National Press Club, in the capital, to press home this demand on Friday.
Mymensingh 1 lawmaker Jewel Areng attended the event as its chief guest, while Haluaghat Upazila Parishad Chairman Mahmudul Haque Saem, joined as a special guest.
Khedmot Ali Master, founder of Probin Krishak Kallyan Foundation, also participated in the human chain.
Addressing the programme, Abu Taleb Khoka, executive director of PKKF, said, "Bangladesh is an agriculture-driven country where about 80-90% people directly or indirectly rely on agriculture."
"Farmers are the soul of agriculture, contributing immensely to the national economy. But they have been socially unrecognised even 49 years after the country achieved its independence. So, we demand that 8 January be recognised as National Farmers' Day," he added.
Ajgor Ali Rupok, managing director of the organisation, said, "The United States observes 12 October as National Farmers' Day, while China and India observe it, respectively, on 12 October and 23 December. It is our failure that even after 49 years of independence, we have not offered such recognition to our farmers."
