Rajshahi University (RU) administration has cut down at least one hundred palm trees amid the general holidays declared by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
All the trees were located at the lawn in front of the administration building square.
Teachers and students of the university have expressed their concerns on social media about the cutting down of the trees.
Professor Dr M A K Azad of Botany Department said, "Corona did not let you live either. Will never see you again. Forgive us."
Tanvir Opu, a traveller who visited 750 cities around the world, posted a video of the place and said at least 100 palm trees have been cut down.
However, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of RU said, "The trees have been cut according to the advice of the horticulture specialist and botany specialist of the university's agriculture project committee because the trees were dying."
"New trees will be planted there as the palm trees do not have any timber value," he added.
