Four people including three women have died in Gaibandha as a Nor'wester swept over the district on Sunday afternoon.

The rainless storm caused uprooting of trees killing the four victims. The deceased were identified as Abul Goffar and Jahanara Begum of Betkapa union in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha and Moyna Begum of Sundarganj upazila. Shiuli Akhter died in Fulchhari upazila.

According to the district administration, hundreds of houses were destroyed and trees were uprooted in Gaibandha Sadar, Palashbari, Sundarganj, Phulbhari and Saghata upazila due to strong winds in the afternoon.

Extensive damage was caused to various crops including electricity poles. The movement of vehicles has disrupted as the stalks of the trees are lying on the road.

Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Abdul Matin said over phone that the storm suddenly started at around 4pm. The houses and trees in different areas were twisted. Four people died when trees fell on them. Many more were injured.
