Northern region in grip of bone-biting cold

Cold waves have started to blow over some parts of the northern region of the country as the temperature is continuously dropping.
People's daily activities are being disrupted due to the bone chilling winter and cold spell. Low income people have fallen into misery due to the increase in fog and cold.
The meteorological office recorded a minimum temperature of 7.9 degrees Celsius in Dinajpur, 10.2 degrees in Rangpur and 8.5 degrees in Rajarhat of Kurigram on Friday.
Rangpur meteorologist Mostafizur Rahman said that a mild cold wave has started in the northern districts from January 13. He informed that there is a possibility of two cold waves in January.
He said that the vehicles were moving on the roads and highways with their headlights on during the day due to the thick fog from midnight to 8 am morning.
Delowar Hossain, a local of Laxmitari union in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur, said people over 40 are suffering from severe cold and freezing temperatures.
People in the northern districts are trying to keep warm by burning hay and wood.
Rangpur District Commissioner Asib Ahsan said, "About 52,000 blankets have been allocated in the district due to the shivering cold."
