Environment ministry reduces Karnaphuli Drydock fine by half

The Department of Environment in Chattogram fined Karnaphuli Dry Dock Ltd Tk1 crore for damaging the environment by building vessels at its dockyard at Anwara upazila without approval

Karnaphuli Dry Dock Ltd had been fined Tk1 crore for damaging the environment by building a dry-dock without approval. After hearing an appeal against the fine, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has reduced the sum by half.

The ministry has now ordered Karnaphuli Dry Dock to pay Tk50 lakh as environmental compensation charges, said a press release received here on Monday.

Earlier, the Department of Environment in Chattogram fined Karnaphuli Dry Dock Tk1 crore for damaging the environment by building vessels at its dockyard at Anwara upazila without approval.

The fine was imposed under section 7 of the relevant environmental law.

Later, Karnaphuli Dry Dock appealed against the fine under section 14 of the same law. After hearing the appeal, the ministry set the minimum compensation limit at Tk50 lakh. 

Karnaphuli Dry Dock has also been asked to submit a letter to guarantee that it will not commit such a crime in the future.
