Northeast China's Jilin Province plans to green over 90,000 hectares of land with trees this year to strengthen its afforestation efforts, local authorities said Tuesday.

As one of the major forestry provinces in China, the province has decided to make April, starting from 2020, an annual afforestation activity month, said Jin Xishuang, director of the provincial forestry and grassland administration.

Citizens in the province are encouraged to plant three to five trees per person per year and participate in afforestation activities including donations and volunteer work.

A total of 80,000 hectares of trees were planted in 2019 in Jilin, which boasts a forest coverage rate of 43.78 percent.
