Nasiruddin Yousuff’s ‘Alpha’ going to the Oscars

Acclaimed filmmaker Nasiruddin Yousuff's latest movie 'Alpha' gets chosen as the official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The decision was made public by the eminent members of the Federation of Bangladesh Film Societies at a press conference earlier this week.

The nine-member committee had the difficult task of finalising from three selected movies. Nasiruddin Yousuff's movie was pitting against Tauqir Ahmed's Fagun Haway and Masum Aziz's Sanataner Golpo. After careful deliberation, the panel chose 'Alpha.'

Alpha revolves around the struggles of a rickshaw painter who gets baffled with the complexities of urban life as his artistic aspirations fail in the shambles of corrupted city life.

Alpha stars Alamgir Kabir and Doyel Mash as lead characters. ATM Shamsuzzaman, Mostafizur Noor Imran and Heera Chowdhury play pivotal parts. The film had its theatrical release in April and was also showcased at the SAARC Film Festival in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

It is the third feature film by Nasiruddin Yousuff. The eminent director made his directorial debut with liberation war film Ekatturer Jishu in 1992. He won the National Film Award for best director for his movie Guerrilla, which was an adaptation of Syed Shamsul Haq's novel Nisshiddho Loban. The 92nd Academy Awards is set to take place Feb 9, 2020.
