82 tonnes of onions from Karachi arrived Wednesday

A 10-tonne consignment of onions from Turkey arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today to mitigate the existing crisis of the key cooking ingredient in the country.

A cargo flight carrying the onions arrived at the airport around 10am, Somoy Television reported quoting a customs official.

Earlier, 82 tonnes of onions from Karachi arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Wednesday evening.

On November 19, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi announced that Bangladesh will get a consignment of 50,000 tonnes of onions by air cargo and another 12,000 tonnes by sea.

The Bangladesh government and traders had made plans to import onions from Egypt, Turkey and the Netherlands after India banned onion exports and Myanmar pumped up prices.

According to the national revenue board data, Bangladesh imported 472,578 tonnes of onions from Australia, China, Egypt, India, Japan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Slovenia, Thailand, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates from September 1 to November 18 this year.

During that period, the largest consignment of onions totalling 4,31,024 tonnes was imported from India.
