Stocks fared well yesterday with an increase in the market turnover.

The premier bourse, Dhaka Stock Exchange remained afloat with all its indices posting gains. The benchmark index, DSEX gained 6.0 points or 0.13 percent to close at 4,459.3 points during the session.

Investors were seen luring in the bank and engineering stocks. The sectors' scrips together contributed around one-third of the total turnover of Tk386.8 crore. Turnover in the previous session stood at Tk296.3 crore.

The market started positive yesterday, but failed to sustain the initial vibe and ended the session with only marginal gains. Banking sector shares declined moderately near the end of the session as investors cast worries over the government move to stabilise interest rate, mentioned the daily market report of EBL Securities Ltd.

Investors went on a selling frenzy on the sectorial giant, the banking sector, that wiped out the earlier gain of the session in spite of an active participation by investors, the report added.

The DSES, the Shariah based index advanced 5.8 points or 0.57 percent while the blue chip index DS30 was up by 4.3 points or 0.29 percent.

At the port city bourse, the key index CASPI gained 0.18 percent yesterday to settle at 13,544.6 points. The selective category index, CSCX, gained 0.16 percent closing at 8,208.4 points.

The Khulna Power Company Limited dominated the turnover table with Tk20.6 crore turnover and closed at Tk51.9 per share. The stock was followed by Brac Bank Limited, Square Pharmaceuticals Limited, Shurwid Industries Limited and Lafarge Holcim Bangladesh Limited.

The Bangladesh Building Systems Ltd topped the gainers chart by closing at Tk17.6 per share by registering a gain of 10 percent. The stock was followed by Meghna Condensed Milk Industries Ltd, Emerald Oil Industries Ltd, Al-Haj Textile Mills Limited and Progressive Life Insurance Co Ltd.

The ICB Islamic Bank Limited was the worst loser, shedding 6.9 percent to close at Tk2.7 per share. The stock was followed by the United Airways (BD) Ltd, Matin Spinning Mills Ltd, Daffodil Computers Ltd. and EBL NRB Mutual Fund.

Among 353 issues traded, 167 advanced, 137 declined and 49 remained unchanged in the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
