Bangladesh ready-made garments (RMG) industry has already started to suffer the impact of pandemic following a surge of order cancellation from different international buyers.

880 garments' factories reported Tk246 crore orders cancellation for more than 77.15 crore units as of Wednesday, according to BGMEA.

This drastic cancellation will affect approximately 17.9 lakh people working in this industry.

Earlier on Monday, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Rubana Huq informed that nine factories have reported a cancellation figure of Tk4.92 crore against 1.8 crore plus pieces.

In her letter to German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Gerd Müller, BGMEA president urged for the support to help prevent a "disastrous impact" on labour force and apparel industry of Bangladesh.

"I will not forget the workers in Bangladesh," said German Minister Muller in his response to the letter and assured that they will find an approach that will safeguard the survival of the textile industry in Germany and also in Bangladesh.

In order to cushion the impact of the pandemic on production countries such as Bangladesh, the German Federal Minister on Tuesday said his ministry is currently evaluating a number of different support measures aimed at ensuring that production companies are able to stay in business and at safeguarding jobs and incomes.
