RMG workers continue agitation for wages
Workers of at least ten garments factories protested in Ashulia and Gazipur on Friday
Hundreds of readymade garment (RMG) workers took to streets on Friday in different industrial areas across the country, ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. They chanted slogans and displayed placards, demanding due wages and other benefits.
Mohammad Amzad Hossain, superintendent of police at Industrial Police Headquarters, told The Business Standard that workers of at least ten garments factories protested on Friday in Ashulia and Gazipur areas.
"Around 2,200 workers of Pakija Knit Composite Ltd at Mojidpur and another 1,500 workers of ZA Apparels Ltd, Kuturia in Ashulia took to the streets and staged demonstration for their Eid bonus.
"Workes were staying in front of the factory gate for bonus," Amzad Hossain added.
Meanwhile, workers of BHIS Apparels Ltd of Tongi and Gazipur areas blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway demanding full bonus.
Besides, hundreds of workers demonstrated and protested in front of Les Fashion Ltd at Kunia.
The workers of Mastercham Ltd were staying in front of the factory gate demanding wages of April and Eid bonus.
According to the reports from our correspondents, workers of several garment factories in Savar, Narayanganj and Gazipur also took to the street for due wages and full bonus.
According to Industrial Police sources, at least 200 factories across the country could not pay the due wages of April and Eid bonus.
According to BGMEA data, among 1,926 factories of BGMEA, some 1,878 have cleared salaries for April until Friday.
It points out that 97.5% factories have paid salaries to workers.
Besides, 1,449 BGMEA factories have paid bonuses to their workers and employees.
