Today is the last day for the readymade garment (RMG) owners to pay last month's wages and salaries.

Workers from many garment factories in the capital went to their workplace to collect their payments, reported Somoy TV.

Garment workers have been demonstrating on the streets demanding last month's pay near their factories in the capital, Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur.

Earlier, Labour and Employment Ministry directed the garment owners to pay last month's wages and salaries to their workers by April 16.

However, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claimed, "Some 78% workers of BGMEA member factories have already received their last month's due salaries."

It claimed approximately 19,19,600 of their 24,72,417 workers have been paid.

"I hope, by April 20, all RMG workers will receive the salary. The small and medium garment factories are delaying to pay," BGMEA President Rubana Haq said in an audio message.

On March 26, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Rubana Huq urged the owners to consider closure of their factories as the nation is fighting to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The government extended the public holidays till April 25 to curb the novel coronavirus spread across the country.
