10 RMG workers contract Covid-19 in Gazipur

In Gazipur, 10 garment factory workers have contracted Covid-19 till Friday. The workers are now either at the hospital or in isolation at their homes. So far, 338 people have been infected with the novel coronavirus in the district.

Gazipur Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Mohammad Shaheen said 10 workers of seven garment factories in Gazipur have been infected with Covid-19 till Friday. Among them are four people, including a father and daughter, plus their two neighbors, who work at Lipi Garments and Fantasy Garment Factory in Bagherbazar area of Gazipur Sadar Upazila.

Their village home is in Kaukandi area of Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district. The infected workers were working in the factory for a few days. Authorities, on Thursday, asked for a list of names of other workers they had come into contact with to collect their samples. They have been kept in isolation at their homes.

He added that they went to their village home in Sunamganj after the factory was closed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. There, their samples were collected on April 22 for Covid-19 testing. Before receiving the test report, they returned to their rented house in Gazipur on April 26 and went to work. The report of the sample test reached Sunamganj on May 4.

The four infected with the Covid-19 were not found in their village houses and the matter was reported to the Gazipur administration on May 5 through the local administration.

Sushant Sarker, additional superintendent of Gazipur industrial police, said the novel coronavirus was first detected on April 26 in a garment factory worker in Gazipur. His home is in the Jaipur Hat district. He was admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital and kept in isolation.

Later, on May 1, a worker from Naogaon district was admitted to the Tongi Health Hospital. Then, on May 2, a worker from Rangpur district, and on May 7, a worker from Lalmonirhat district were admitted to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital. 

In addition, six more workers infected with Covid-19 are in home isolation. As of Friday, Covid-19 has been identified in ten workers of seven garment factories in Gazipur.

Gazipur Civil Surgeon Khairuzzaman said in the last 24 hours, two people tested positive for Covid-19 in the sadar and sreepur upazilas. So far, a total of 338 people have contracted the novel coronavirus in five upazilas of Gazipur.  

Sadar upazila has the highest number of cases. A total 119 people have been infected in this upazila. Among them are 40 doctors and staff of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital in Tentuibari of the district. 

Among those Covid-19 positive in other upazilas: 91 are in Kaliganj, 70 in Kapasia, 34 in Kaliakair, and 24 in Sreepur upazila. In the last 24 hours, 130 samples were collected and sent to the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research, in Dhaka, for testing. A total of 3,771 samples from the district were collected for Covid-19 testing.
