Power, energy sector allocation rises
The power and energy sector is allocated Tk 27,930 crore in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2019-20.
The amount is up by 5.86% from the previous year’s revised budget of Tk26,385 crore.
The allocation amounts to around 5.34% of the total proposed budget.
Under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) of the inaugural budget of Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, the Power Division is allocated Tk26,014 crore and the Energy and Mineral Resources Division gets Tk1,916 crore.
In his budget speech, the finance minister said the government is planning to double the production of electricity within the next decade.
“Besides, projects for the construction of 53 power plants with a capacity to generate 14,202 megawatts of electricity are underway,” he told parliament.
He said that the Rooppur nuclear power plant will add new supply to the grid.
The finance minister said the government has a vision to reduce the use of fuel to ensure energy security and sustainable energy supply system.
“There are targets to generate 10 per cent of the total electricity from renewable sources by 2020,” Kamal said.
