Chattogram customs foils Tk60 lakh duty evasion attempt

Chattogram customs officials have foiled an attempt to evade of Tk60 lakh in import duty by a Dhaka-based importer through false declaration.
The Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) unit of the Chattogram Customs House on Tuesday conducted a physical examination at the Chattogram Port yard and found the non-declared goods in the consignment and seized it.
Customs House sources said M/S Siam Enterprise, an importer from Dhaka, had a declaration to import 13,520 kg of olives and peanuts from Malaysia, but brought in 21,060 kg of baby food Nestlé Lactogen.
On behalf of the importer, C&F (Clearing and Forwarding) agent Khan Enterprise submitted the bill of entry to Chattogram Customs House on April 23 to take delivery of the consignment from the port.
Nur-e-Hasna Sanjida Anushua, assistant commissioner of customs (AIR unit), said as the importer illegally brought the consignment with false declaration to evade Tk60 lakh import duty, legal action will be taken against those involved as per the customs law.
"Nestlé's milk can only be imported by their authorised dealers. In that case, there will be an instruction in the packets in Bengali language that there is no alternative to mother's milk," she added.
