UIU secures research fund from UGC
United International University (UIU) has secured TK 13 crore in funding for three major research projects under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project, supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and the World Bank.
The projects aim to deliver AI-driven solutions in healthcare and build climate-resilient housing for vulnerable communities.
The first project, SmartAMR: Advancing Digital Healthcare with AI-driven Intelligence, led by Dr. Tahmina Foyez, Associate Professor and Head of Pharmacy, alongside Dr. Ohidujjaman Tuhin, Assistant Professor in CSE, focuses on improving medical adherence, reducing prescription errors, and addressing antimicrobial resistance.
The second project, AIMScribe: AI-Driven Scribing System with Prescription Counselling Tools, will be led by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurul Huda from CSE, with Prof. Dr. Kaled Masukur Rahman, Head of EEE. It seeks to streamline clinical documentation, ensure safer prescriptions, and empower patients with AI-based tools.
The third project, Development of a Modular System for Amphibious Disaster-Resistant Homes, spearheaded by Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, with Lecturer Mr. Nazmus Sakib Pallab, aims to design sustainable flood-resilient housing using bamboo ferrocement panels.
The contract signing ceremony was attended by UGC Chairman Prof. Dr. SMA Faiz, UGC Members Prof. Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and Prof. Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman, and HEAT Project Director Prof. Dr. Asaduzzaman, alongside World Bank representatives. From UIU, the Sub-Project Managers, Treasurer Engr. Md. Abdul Moqaddem and Prof. Khondaker A. Mamun, Director of IRIIC, were present.
UIU stated that these initiatives reflect its commitment to leveraging innovation and research to address national challenges in healthcare, technology, and disaster resilience. The Institute for Research, Innovation, Incubation & Commercialization (IRIIC) played a central role in facilitating the projects.
