Immediately report irregularities: Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank to GMs

Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Kazi Sayedur Rahman directed the GMs to immediately report irregularities to restore the image of the central bank which has been tarnished due to instability and irregularities in the financial sector.

He gave the directive in a closed-door meeting with the General Managers (GMs) of all departments of the central bank on Tuesday. The news was later confirmed by meeting sources.

The deputy governor said any irregularities should be reported directly to him, through either formal or informal process. Complaints can also be made by e-mail.

Rahman said that to restore the image of the central bank, no one would have to come up with new initiatives. Instead, if the central bank can perform its core activities properly, that would suffice. He has also instructed to increase inspection and supervision.  

"It is possible to do something if you have the mentality to do it and with the GMs onboard, the image of the central bank can be restored," continued the deputy governor.

According to the sources, this was the first time Kazi Sayedur Rahman met all the GMs since he became the Deputy Governor from the Executive Director.

At the meeting, some of the General Managers brought up the issue of the transfer of Shah Alam, an executive director of the bank. According to the GMs, the central bank did not take any action even when they came to know about Shah Alam's irregularities initially and stated that the transfer was not enough of an action.  

It is important to note that, Rashedul Haque, former managing director of International Leasing, confessed to the court in the ACC case that Shah Alam, then general manager of the department of financial institutions and market and current executive director along with S K Sur Chowdhury, former deputy governor, was directly involved in PK Haldar's irregularities.
