Tourists throng Cox’s Bazar beach despite inclement weather

The cyclonic storm Bulbul weakened and turned into a deep depression early Sunday after hitting the coastal districts Khulna, Bagerhat and Pirojpur. The Bay of Bengal however remains turbulent. 

Despite witnessing a sunny weather in the morning, Cox's Bazar faced drizzles of rain as the day progressed. Tourists were seen enjoying themselves at the beach and bathing in the sea, ignoring the inclement weather. 

Life guards remain on alert on the beach to prevent any accidents.

Speaking to The Business Standard, Seasafe Lifeguard Supervisor Osman Gani said, "The Bay was very turbulent due to the impact of the Cyclone Bulbul since Saturday morning. A major portion of the tourists visiting Cox's Bazar spent the entire day inside hotel rooms and lobbies.

"After the cyclone passed through Khulna, tourists of all ages jumped into the sea on Sunday morning."

Saint Martin Union Parishad Chairman Nur Ahmed has confirmed The Business Standard that marooned tourists are safe on the island and the administration is looking after them.

"The tourists were moved to shelters and multistoried hotels alongside with local people to protect them from the storm. They were provided with cheaper food and accommodation as per direction of the district administration.

The stranded tourists can return home after the weather gets a bit better. Ships might arrive on Monday," he added.

Reiterating the same statement, Shah Alam, manager of Keari Sindbad, and Keari Cruise and Dine said: "The danger signal 3 is still being hoisted. Ships carrying tourists will depart the island on Monday after the danger signal is lower further."

Cox Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain said, "Low lying areas in the region, such as Moheshkhali and Kutubdia have been inundated by the more than usual high tide. We have instructed the Upazila Nirbahi Officers to take necessary action where needed."

Meanwhile, Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police Md Iqbal Hossain said, "Law enforcers, along with the tourist police are on alert to avert any untoward incident throughout the district."
