Satkhira looks like a war zone after cyclone Bulbul

Munshiganj and Burigoalini areas of Satkhira look like a war zone in the aftermath of cyclonic storm Bulbul, due to many uprooted trees, destroyed thatched houses and tipped over electricity transmission lines. 

The eight kilometres road from Munshiganj Bazar to Nildumur is currently out of order, as uprooted tree trunks have made it impossible for any vehicle to ply the road. The only way to commute is to move on foot.

A team from The Business Standard walked all the way to see the damage the storm has caused overnight - barely leaving even one house unaffected in the area. Tin roofs were torn like paper sheets, road communication remain snapped and power is still cut. 

Torrential rain has caused the whole area to be inundated.

This place, situated at the mouth of the Sundarbans, lies at the southernmost part of Shyamnagar upazila in Sathkhira, an area that took the first onslaught of the tropical storm.

Everywhere people were seen busy clearing their roofs or the roads, blocked with uprooted trees.

Commenting on the situation, rickshaw-van puller Abdul Mazid said, "We are lucky to have escaped any casualty, as my family members had moved to a different room that remained undamaged. 

"The storm roared all night. During dawn, just before the azan a tree fell with a huge thud."

The shrimp ponds were levelled as the fields has become inundated. Abdur Rahman, a small shrimp farmer, said the storm caused him a huge loss, but he will concentrate on his damaged house first.

Zamirul Islam, additional superintendent of police (Kaliganj circle) said that no casualty were reported in the area. However, houses are damaged and road communication remains snapped.
