Global coronavirus death toll hits 200,000, cases over 2.8 million

The number of deaths linked to the novel coronavirus reached 200,000 on Saturday, as the tally of cases passed 2.8 million, according to John Hopkins University data.

The first death came in the central Chinese city of Wuhan on January 9. It took 83 days for the first 50,000 deaths to be recorded, eight more for the toll to climb to 100,000 and only 14 more days for the toll to reach 200,000.
