However, this time, the entire district will not be locked down

The local administration in Sylhet has decided to put the district on lockdown again from Thursday.

However, this time, the entire district will not be locked down. Only the areas marked as red zones will come under restrictions.

But it has not been decided yet as to which areas will be marked as red zones.

The Sylhet deputy commissioner presided over the meeting at the Circuit House on Tuesday where the decision on lockdown was made.

Administration officials said that the areas which will be marked as red zones will be finalised within a few days.

Sylhet Civil Surgeon Dr Premananda Mondal said the decision has been made to implement the lockdown from June 18. "As there are more patients inside the city, most areas there will be marked as red zones."

He said Covid-19 patients are most prevalent in wards 1 to 24 in North Surma of the city.

"So, all the wards here may be locked down. Besides, the unions in the upazila which have more infections will be locked down.

"However, as seen in many unions, the number of Covid-19 patients is high in one area. So that particular area will be locked down, not the whole union," he added.

A final decision will be made in this regard within a few days, said Dr Premananda.

Earlier, considering the rate of coronavirus infections, the government had divided different areas of the country into red, yellow and green zones.

Monday was declared a general holiday in the red and yellow zones as the government announced to increase army patrol in the red zones.

Earlier, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Kazi Emdadul Islam had declared a lockdown in the district on April 11 to prevent Covid-19 infections.
