Around 3,000 garment workers of eight factories in Savar and Ashuila on Thursday staged demonstrations demanding their arrear salaries for March.

The Business Standard could obtain the names of six out of those eight factories. They are: Faolin Ltd, Gloria Dress Ltd, and Penta Foot Garment of Savar; and ZA Apparel Ltd, Crystal Garment, and Allign Garment of Ashulia.

Confirming the matter, Assistant Police Superintendent of Industrial Police Unit-1 Jane Alam Khan said, "Workers of eight apparel factories took to the street demanding outstanding wages. Later, we dispersed them after talking to the owners of the factories."

"The owners said they would pay the wages very soon," he added.

On Thursday morning, around 100 workers of a garment blocked a road in the capital's Kamlapur area demanding their arrear salaries for March.

Earlier on Wednesday, workers from over 50 garment factories in Dhaka, Gazipur and Chattogram staged demonstrations for the same reason.

They blocked roads in Uttara, Tongi, Savar and Ashulia in Dhaka, as well as in Gazipur and Chattogram.

The workers staged protests because most factory owners have not declared any specific deadline by which they will pay their workers their previous month's wages, according to police and industry insiders.
