The government is all set to import some 30 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines and those will be distributed among the people free of cost.

The authorities would set priority as per World Health Organization (WHO) protocol, said Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam at a press briefing at the secretariat on Monday, following a virtual cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, reports Prothom Alo.  

The government is going to bring a total of 30 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines jointly developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

In this regard, an agreement has already been signed between Seram Institute India and Beximco Pharmaceuticals.  The government has allocated Tk 735.77 crore for purchasing the vaccine.

Khandaker Anwarul also disclosed that the government was mulling jail sentences for not wearing masks. 

"The government is being stricter to make people wear masks. From now on, the maximum fine will be imposed if people don't wear masks. The situation will be monitored for 7 to 10 days. If situation does not improve in the meantime, the decision of imprisonment would be enforced," he explained.
