Lalmonirhat sees spike in Covid-19 cases

The number of patients diagnosed with Covid-19 has been on the rise in Lalmonirhat district amid the second wave of the deadly virus, triggering fear among locals.

Although the local administration is running an awareness campaign, all establishments, including offices and markets, are in full swing with the exception of educational institutions.

Almost 60% to 70% people are walking about without masks.   

The Civil Surgeon's office said 40 people were Covid-19 positive out of 132 samples in the past four days which shows an upward trend in the second wave of the pandemic.

Last year, 9 people died in the first wave and the second wave has already claimed 14 lives.

So far, 207 of 398 Bangladeshi returnees from foreign countries, have left the Burimari Immigration Post with Covid-19 negative certificates, since 26 April, 2020.  The remaining 191 returnees are in quarantine.

According to the Civil Surgeon's report, 1,141 people have been detected with the virus in the district, and 1,057 have recovered until today.

Currently, 55 people are in home quarantine and 13 others in institutional quarantine.

Meanwhile, the country continues to see an upward trend in Covid-19 infections with 2,537 people having contracted the dreaded virus in the last 24 hours. 

Single day deaths saw a slight drop, with 33 people having succumbed to the disease till Wednesday 8 am. 

With today's figures, the total death toll has increased to 12,949 and the infection case tally has reached 8,17,819, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
