Former Dhaka lawmaker and Awami League leader Mockbul Hossain has died from the novel coronavirus Sunday.

He was undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital, where he passed away around 9pm.

MA Sattar, president Mohammadpur Thana AL confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

Mockbul was elected as member of the parliament in 1996 from Dhaka's Mohammadpur constituency.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Mockbul Hossain.

In a condolence message, the prime minister said Moqbul Hossain had worked for the people and the party as a public-friendly leader.

She also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and extended profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Bangladesh Sunday reported its highest daily death toll from the novel coronavirus, with 28 patients succumbing to the deadly virus, increasing the total deaths to 480 in the country. The number of total virus infection stood at 33,610.
