Coronavirus to stay here for few years: DGHS

Covid-19, the disease from the novel coronavirus infection, is not going to cease within a few months, but may prolong to a couple of years or more, according to the global public health experts.

"Although the contagion rate may come down at one point of time, but it is not leaving us anytime soon," said Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In a virtual health briefing today Dr Abul Kalam said, "Bangladesh is a populous and jam-packed country, while on the other hand coronavirus is a highly contagious and virulent virus. Therefore, it is hard to rein in the virus unless precautionary measures and health guidelines are religiously followed."  

"The government is working hard to strike a balance between life and livelihood despite the sweeping global spread of Covid-19 and its containment measures," he added.

He also said, "The work to build sustainable capabilities has accelerated under the guidance of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who recently appointed 2,000 doctors and 5,000 nurses to join the fight against the pandemic.

"Moreover, the steps to ensure quality Covid-19 and other treatments, at both government and private hospitals, are being taken."

He further added that the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing, central oxygen supply system and ICU facilities will be extended up to the district level as early as possible.
