Covid-19 tests decline, cases decline

Highlights:

Bangladesh recorded 834 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours till Saturday 8am. This is the lowest daily infection count in the past 145 days.

Previously, the lowest number of infections in a single day was 886, which was reported on 2 August.

In the past 24 hours, 9,912 samples were tested in 163 labs across the country. The last time less than 10,000 samples were tested for Covid-19 in a day was on 11 October when 9,467 tests were reported.

Bangladesh confirmed 30 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

After coming down for two days, the daily Covid-19 deaths have increased again. On 24 and 25 December, the daily death counts from the virus were 19 and 20 respectively.  

The total number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 508,099 and death toll at 7,428, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services.

The daily infection rate has been below 10% of the total tests for the last seven days.

The latest day's infection rate was 8.41% of the total tests. The overall infection rate in the country to date is 16.08%. The death rate stands at 1.46%.

Meanwhile, 1,685 patients were declared free of Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of recoveries to 450,488, with an 88.66% recovery rate.

Among the latest day's victims, 23 were men and seven were women. All 30 of them died in different hospitals across the country.

Moreover, 20 of the victims hailed from Dhaka, seven from Chattogram, and one each from Khulna, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions.

The country's first Covid-19 case was reported on 8 March this year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.

Another doctor dies from Covid-19

A life member of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) and Director of Nibedita Shishu Hospital, paediatrician Dr Md Anwarul Karim has died from Covid-19.

He breathed his last at the intensive care unit of Asgar Ali Hospital in the capital around 3pm on Friday, says a press release from the BMA.

He was 61 years old at the time of his death and left behind his family members, friends and admirers.

Dr Md Anwarul Karim was a student of Sir Salimullah Medical College.

With this, 120 doctors and two dental surgeons have died so far from Covid-19 in the country, according to the BMA press release.
