Coronavirus cases cross 200,000-mark in Bangladesh today, with newly reported 2,709 cases and 34 deaths

After more than four months of first detection of the novel coronavirus infection in Bangladesh, the tally of Covid-19 cases crossed the 200,000-mark here today.

With 2,709 freshly confirmed cases of the viral infection, the total cases reached 202,066. 

Besides, the health directorate confirmed 34 more deaths from the dreaded coronavirus in the last 24 hours. With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 2,581.

Additional Director General of Health Directorate Nasima Sultana made the disclosure during a virtual briefing today.

The health department reported first Covid-19 case on March 8 and first death from the virus on March 18. 

Bangladesh reported first 100,000 Covid-19 cases on June 18 after 103 days the outbreak began. However, the next 100,000 cases were reported in last 30 days.

According to the analysis of Covid-19 victims' age groups as of today, the highest number of patients - 44.09 percent or 1,138 - died till date are aged sixty and above. The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next with respectively 29.91 percent (772) and 14.22 percent (367). Rest of the age groups stand under seven percent, such as- 31-40 with 6.97 percent (180), 21-30 with 3.02 percent (78), 11-20 with 1.12 percent (29) and under ten with 0.66 percent (17).

The gender-wise analysis of the victims disclosed that some 2,040 people who have died from Covid-19 are males and 541 are females, which are 79.04% and 20.96% respectively.

District-wise, out of 2,581 fatalities till date, 49.17 percent or 1,269 are hailed from Dhaka division, 25.49 or 658 percent from Chattogram, 6.04 percent or 156 from Khulna, 5.27 percent or 136 from Rajshahi, 4.65 percent or 120 from Sylhet, 3.80 percent or 98 from Barishal, 3.37 percent or 87 from Rangpur and 2.21 percent or 57 from Mymensingh.

Dr Nasima Said, "Some 10,632 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 10,923 were tested in 80 labs across the country. So far 1,017,674 samples have been tested."

Besides, some 1,373 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 110,098.

Around 54.49 percent of novel coronavirus patients – both symptomatic and asymptomatic – have recovered in Bangladesh so far, while 1.28 percent have died.

The latest day's infection rate was 24.80 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 19.86 percent.

Currently, 59,693 people are quarantined across the country – including 1,781 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 347,618 people have completed their quarantine course.

The country is capable of accommodating 31,991 people at 629 institutional quarantine facilities across the country.

Nasima Sultana said, "The authorities placed 779 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 18,498 after 23,040 left."

As many as 16,828,398 hotline health services were given by 16,492 trained and 4,217 volunteer doctors via three designated numbers, including 97,203 in the last 24-hour till 8am today.

The deadly virus has killed 599,716 people globally and infected 14,205,416 so far.
