The youth and his relatives initially denied that he had recently returned from Narayanganj

A 16-month-old child in Khulna and a 26-year old youth in Satkhira died of Covid-19 symptoms on Saturday.

The child named Fatema hails from Kachua upazila in Bagerhat and was undergoing treatment at the Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) when she died in the morning.

Fatema was admitted to the children's ward with diarrhoea on Friday. Later she was transferred to the isolation unit after respiratory complications arose.

Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, KMCH resident physician and spokesperson of the Covid-19 isolation ward Dr Shailendra Nath Biswas said her samples had been collected for tests and her family members have been instructed to be in quarantine.

A youth named Harun died at 6am on Saturday at the Satkhira Sadar Hospital. He had a headache, fever and cough after recently returning from Narayanganj.

He was admitted to the Shyamnagar Hospital and later transferred to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.

Locals said Harun had returned from Narayanganj five to seven days ago.

Satkhira Civil Surgeon Dr Hussain Shafayet said neither Harun nor his relatives provided correct information regarding where he was. They denied he was in Narayanganj. Later, the neighbours revealed it.

His death has spread panic in the hospital and among his neighbours. Two nurses, who looked after him, have been sent to quarantine, the civil surgeon added.

Samples have been collected from his wife for testing, Dr Hussain further said.
