Bangladesh records highest 5,181 new cases, 45 deaths in a day

Bangladesh on Monday saw an alarming growth in the number of Covid-19 cases as 5,181 people were diagnosed with the disease in 24 hours which is the highest in a single day till date.

Besides, the country reported 45 more deaths, the highest daily figure since 28 August from the novel coronavirus.Earlier on 28 August, the health department reported 47 deaths from the dreaded virus.

The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 8,949 and the number of cases now stands at 600,895, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest day's infection rate was 18.38% of the total tests.The death rate stands at 1.49%.

Among the latest day's victims, 30 were men and 15 were women. 44 of them died in different hospitals across the country while one at home.

Moreover, 28 of them hailed from Dhaka, six from Chattogram, five from Rajshahi, three from Khulna, and one each from Barishal, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions.

Meanwhile, 28,195 samples were tested in 224 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 4,617,025 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 2,077 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 538,018 with a 89.54% recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 6,746 of the total deceased were men and 2,203 were women.

The country's maiden cases were reported on  8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.
