Bangladesh reports highest-ever 112 Covid deaths in a day

Bangladesh set another grim record as 112 more deaths from Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours ending at 8am Monday. 

The daily death toll crossed the 100-mark for the first time on Friday, and the upward trend continued since then. On Friday and Saturday, 101 people each lost the battle against the deadly virus and another 102 died on Sunday.

With Monday's figures, the Covid-19 death toll reached 10,497 in the country with a fatality rate of 1.45%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

As the number of samples increased, the number of new infections rose as well, with 4,271 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

Bangladesh tested 24,152 samples today while the number was 19,404 on Sunday with 3,698 new infections on that day. The number of daily samples was below the 2,000-mark for the last four days. 

Among the latest day's victims, 75 were men and 37 were women. Of them, 108 died in different hospitals across the country and three breathed their last at home. Besides, one more Covid patient died on the way to a hospital. 

Moreover, 71 of the victims hailed from Dhaka, 19 from Chattogram, 10 from Khulna, five from Rajshahi, three from Sylhet, two from Rangpur and one each from Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

Meanwhile, 6,364 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, with an 85.91% recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 7,769 of the total deceased were men and 2,728 were women.

The country's maiden cases were reported on 8 March last year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March that year.

India recorded 2,73,810 fresh infections and 1,619 deaths in a new record high, taking the caseload to 1.5 crore; 1.78 lakh people have died so far. This is the fifth straight day that over 2 lakh cases were reported, reports NDTV. 

India has the second-highest number of cases after the United States (3.15 crore). 

Worldwide, 142,064,856 cases have been recorded so far and 3,034,404 people have died of Covid-19 to date.
