Total infection rate increases to 19.92%

The total infection rate of Covid-19 in Bangladesh reached 19.92 percent on Monday – the highest so far – after 2,928 more people tested positive for the virus.

This takes the total number of infections in the country to 207,453.

Bangladesh also recorded 50 more deaths from the novel coronavirus between Sunday 8am and Monday 8am, taking the death toll from the deadly virus to 2,668, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The single-day infection rate stood at 21.91 percent on Monday.

"Of the deceased, 35 are men and 15 are women," DGHS Additional Director General (administration) Professor Dr Nasima Sultana said during the daily virtual health bulletin.

She informed that 21 of the deceased patients hailed from Dhaka, 10 from Khulna, seven from Chattogram, five from Rajshahi, three from Sylhet, and two each from Rangpur and Barishal divisions.

"Forty-two of them died in different hospitals and eight at their respective homes," Dr Nasima further said.

In terms of the number of Covid-19 cases, Bangladesh is currently in the 16th position on the list of worst-affected countries globally, according to Worldometer.

A gender-wise analysis of the victims reveals that some 2,104 people who have died from Covid-19 so far are male and 564 are female, which is 78.86 percent and 21.14 percent, respectively.

District-wise, out of the 2,668 fatalities till date, 48.91 percent or 1,305 people hailed from Dhaka division, 25.22 percent or 673 from Chattogram, 6.48 percent or 173 from Khulna, 5.40 percent or 144 from Rajshahi, 4.69 percent or 125 from Sylhet, 3.75 percent or 100 from Barishal, 3.37 percent or 90 from Rangpur, and 2.17 percent or 57 from Mymensingh.

"Some 13,329 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 13,362 were tested in 80 labs across the country. So far 1,041,661 samples have been tested," said Dr Nasima.

Besides, some 1,914 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 113,556 and the recovery rate to around 54.74 percent.

"The authorities have placed 823 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 18,612 after 23,358 left," the DGHS official added.
