Bangladesh surpasses Italy with nearly 2.5 lakh Covid-19 cases

The number of Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh reached near the 2.5 lakh mark on Thursday, the 152nd day since the first coronavirus infection was detected here. 

Around 2,977 people tested Covid-19 positive in Bangladesh in the last 24 hours until Thursday 8 am. With this, the number of total cases stood at 249,651. 

Surpassing Italy, Bangladesh is now 15th on the list of countries having high prevalence of novel coronavirus infections in the world. Italy has a total of 248,803 Covid-19 positive cases so far.

Also, Bangladesh confirmed 39 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours. With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 3,306, Professor Dr Bayezid Khurshid Riyaz, director of National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM), made the disclosure during a virtual briefing on Thursday. 

"Of the expired patients, 32 are men and seven women. Moreover, 17 of them are from Dhaka, seven from Chattogram, four from Khulna, three each from Rajshahi and Rangpur, two each from Barishal and Sylhet and one from Mymensingh division," he added.

Thirty of them have died in different hospitals and nine at their respective residences.

Some 13,189 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 12,708 were tested in 83 labs across the country. So far 1,225,124 samples have been tested.

In the last 24 hours, the infection rate was 23.43 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 20.38 percent. The current death rate in the country for Covid-19 is 1.32 percent.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19's victims shows that 78.83 percent or 2,606 of the total are men and 21.21 percent or 700 women.

According to the age group analysis of Covid-19 victims, as of Thursday, the majority of the patients that died - 1,549 - were aged between sixty and above. The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next with respectively 947 and 458 deaths. The rest belong to the age group of 31-40 with 214 people, 21-30 with 87 people, 11-20 with 32 people and under ten with 18 people.

A total of 2,074 patients were declared free of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours and the total number of recoveries reached 143,824 and recovery rate is around 57.61 percent.
