Covid-19 cases increase as testing ramps up

Bangladesh confirmed 35 more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 3,009 new infections after testing 14,127 samples in the last 24 hours till 8am today.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 3,035 and the number of total infections stood at 232,194.

Additional Director General (administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Professor Dr Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures during the daily virtual health bulletin on Wednesday.

After 25 days, the number of daily tests reached the 14,000 mark again. As tests increased, the number of detection has also increased. On Tuesday, 2,960 new cases were reported after testing 12,714 samples.

The death rate now stands at 1.31 percent. The latest day's infection rate was 21.30 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 20.17 percent.

Besides, some 2,878 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 130,292 and recovery rate 56.11 percent. 

Dr Nasima said, "Some 14,253 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 14,127 were tested in 82 labs across the country. So far 1,151,285 samples have been tested.

"Of the deceased patients, 30 are men and five women. Moreover, 14 of them hailed from Dhaka, eight from Chattogram, four from Barishal, two from Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet each, and one from Mymensingh division."

She added that 29 of them died in different hospitals and six died at their respective homes.

Gender-wise analysis of the victims revealed that some 2,355 people who died from Covid-19 are men and 647 are women, which are 78.68 percent and 21.32 percent respectively.

Division-wise, out of 3,035 fatalities till date, 48.04 percent or 1,458 are hailed from Dhaka division, 24.35 or 739 percent from Chattogram, 7.07 percent or 214 from Khulna, 5.90 percent or 179 from Rajshahi, 4.81 percent or 146 from Sylhet, 3.92 percent or 119 from Barishal, 3.79 percent or 115 from Rangpur, and 2.14 percent or 65 from Mymensingh.
