Bangladesh confirms 7 more deaths from coronavirus, 312 new cases

Bangladesh today confirmed seven more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 312 new cases of infection after testing 2,634 samples in last 24 hours.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rises to 91 and the number of total infected person stands at 2,456.

"Some 2,634 samples were tested during the time," Health Minister Zahid Maleque said in a virtual briefing today.

He said nine patients have recovered in the last 24 hours making it a total of 75 recovered so far.

The minister said, "Local administration totally failed on Saturday to control the crowd at the funeral of Maulana Ansari in Brahmanbaria. We suspect the virus might spread further from the gathering."

"We are in the 7th week of infection and showing comparatively better results than other countries. Therefore I would request everyone to follow health advices to contain virus spread in the country," he said, adding, "Almost 80% patients shows little to no symptoms, whereas only 15% needs hospital treatment and 5% requires ventilator."

During the briefing, Additional Director General of Health Directorate Nasima Sultana said, "Among the infected 312 patients, 66% are male and 34% female. 44% of them are from Dhaka, 31% from Narayanganj and rest 25% are from other parts of the country."

"Among the seven dead patients- five are male and two are female. Three were from Dhaka and four from Narayanganj," Nasima Sultana said further.

"Some 52 patients were sent to isolation, 3,892 to home quarantine and 479 institutional quarantine in last 24 hours. Currently 640 are in isolation, 46,695 in home quarantine and 4,473 in institutional quarantine," she added.

As many as 97,938 hotline calls were received on three designated numbers in last 24 hours, that makes the total hotline services provided so far to 2,820,348.

Through mobile and website, 41,392 services were provided in last 24 hours, making the total to 1,277,106 by far.

Till date, a total of 6,71,570 thermal screening were conducted at different ports, including- 11 at airports, 79 at seaports and 83 at land ports in past 24 hours.
